This past week, Salem Balloons and Flowers was commissioned by Wealth Hospitality to provide the visual anchor for the official groundbreaking ceremony of the new Springhill Suites by Marriott in Salem, Oregon.
The Challenge: Aesthetics vs. The Elements
A groundbreaking ceremony is a unique logistical puzzle. It takes place on an active, open-air construction site, an environment defined by dust, uneven terrain, and the unpredictable winds of the Willamette Valley. For a global brand like Marriott, "good enough" is never the standard. The installation needed to reflect the prestige of the brand while standing firm against the elements.
The Solution: Architectural Integrity
While many hobbyists rely on lightweight, portable kits, our studio approaches outdoor installations through the lens of structural engineering. For this project, we deployed our proprietary, heavy-duty exterior rigging.
When the client asked if our signature columns needed to be tethered to the event tenting for stability, our answer was simple: “No need; these are engineered for the field.” By utilizing weighted, industrial-grade frames and professional-grade latex specifically treated to endure the midday sun, we ensured that the black-and-gold installations remained crisp, vibrant, and perfectly upright from the first shovel hit to the final media interview.

The final design featured a massive entrance arch and structural columns that mirrored the sophisticated color palette of the Marriott brand. It provided the high-fidelity backdrop necessary for local media coverage and executive photography, proving that even on a dirt lot, the right design can create an atmosphere of luxury.
